Creating Task Dependencies in Gantt Charts
Create task dependencies in QuoteCloud’s Gantt Chart to ensure tasks follow a logical order. Ideal for managing projects where one task relies on another’s completion.

Understand task dependencies
Linking tasks in your Gantt Chart helps you visualise how different activities depend on each other. Once tasks are connected, a change in one task can automatically affect related tasks.Choose the task to edit
Start creating dependencies by right-clicking the task you want to update. This opens the task context menu.Open Edit Task
Click Edit Task to modify the selected task’s details. The Gantt Chart Data Editing panel will open on the right-hand side.Review dependency tabs
In the right-hand panel, you will see three tabs: General , Predecessors , and Successors . Use these tabs to define how tasks are connected in your project.Understand predecessors
A predecessor is a task that must occur before another task can begin. Predecessor relationships help define what needs to happen first.Understand successors
A successor is a task that depends on another task before it can start or finish. In simple terms, it is the task that comes next in the sequence.Add a successor
Choose either Predecessors or Successors , then click the plus button to add a dependency. For this walkthrough, add a successor.Select the successor task
After adding the dependency, choose the task that will follow the current task. For example, select Development Setup as the successor.Choose the dependency type
Select the dependency type that determines how one task relates to another. The most common type is Finish to Start , where the next task cannot start until the predecessor finishes.Understand other dependency types
Start to Start means the next task starts at the same time as its predecessor. Finish to Finish means the next task finishes when the predecessor finishes, while Start to Finish means the next task cannot finish until the predecessor starts.Add a predecessor
You can also add a predecessor dependency by following the same steps. For example, link Development Setup as the task that comes before User Interface .Review the dependency line
A line will appear on the Gantt Chart after tasks are linked. This line shows the connection between the tasks you just linked.
FAQs
What are task dependencies in a Gantt Chart?
Task dependencies define relationships between tasks that determine sequencing — typically when one task (the predecessor) must finish before another task (the successor) can start. They make your Gantt Chart reflect real-world task order and help prevent scheduling conflicts.
Why should I use task dependencies in QuoteCloud’s Gantt Chart?
Using dependencies keeps timelines accurate by showing how tasks rely on one another, revealing bottlenecks and maintaining logical workflows. For teams using QuoteCloud as sales quoting software or proposal software, dependencies help align post‑sale work (implementation, delivery, approvals) with the dates in your quotes and proposals.
Dependencies also reduce manual scheduling because related tasks move together when dates change, saving time and lowering the risk of mistakes.
What types of dependencies can I create in QuoteCloud?
QuoteCloud’s Gantt Chart supports a Finish‑to‑Start relationship, where a successor task is scheduled to start only after its predecessor finishes. This is ideal for phased projects where one task must complete before the next begins.
How do I create a task dependency in the Gantt Chart?
Create a dependency by linking the predecessor task to the successor task inside QuoteCloud’s Gantt Chart. Depending on your Gantt editor, this is commonly done by selecting the two tasks and using the chart’s link/dependency control or by dragging a connector from one task bar to another.
If you need step‑by‑step UI instructions, open the Gantt Chart help or the document editor guide within your QuoteCloud account for detailed guidance.
Can dependencies be edited or removed?
Yes. You can update or delete task links when the project plan changes. Editing or removing dependencies ensures the Gantt Chart continues to represent the current schedule and project priorities.
How do dependencies affect project updates and scheduling?
When a predecessor task’s dates change, linked successor tasks will move accordingly so related tasks stay in sequence. This keeps timelines consistent and reduces manual date adjustments — particularly useful when QuoteCloud is used as your quote software or sales proposal software and project timelines must stay aligned with client commitments.
Best practices for using dependencies in sales quoting and proposal workflows?
Use dependencies to represent true task order (not every task needs a link), name tasks clearly, set milestones for key delivery points, and avoid circular dependencies. For teams using QuoteCloud as quote software or proposal software, tie key implementation tasks to milestones referenced in proposals so clients see realistic dates and your internal schedule stays synchronized.
Troubleshooting: My linked tasks aren’t moving — what should I check?
Common causes include manually applied date constraints, locked or read‑only tasks, or missing links on the correct predecessor/successor. Verify the link exists, check for task constraints or fixed dates that override dependency behavior, and consult the Gantt Chart help or the document editor guide in your QuoteCloud account for UI‑specific troubleshooting steps.
